Ventura happy to see Viciedo’s positive response

Dayan Viciedo was back in the starting lineup Saturday after being pulled from Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader for a baserunning blunder.

In the eighth inning, Viciedo ran through third-base coach Joe McEwing’s stop sign and was easily cut down at home plate.

Viciedo didn’t start in Game 2.

“Yeah, I made a mistake,” Viciedo said through an translator. “He (McEwing) was holding me up, and when I realized it was too late I got caught up there. Once I realized he was holding me up and they were throwing it was too late. I was caught in the middle.”

Viciedo made two nice catches in left field Saturday, and he also went 3-for-4 and drove in a run during the White Sox’ 4-3 loss to Cleveland at U.S. Cellular Field.

“Based on yesterday, I just tried to stay as calm as possible and just play hard today,” he said. “I tried not to let that carry over into today and play hard both in the field and have good at-bats. I had the day that I had, which was good considering how I played yesterday.”

Manager Robin Ventura was happy to see Viciedo respond in a positive fashion.

“He’s fine,” Ventura said. “Energy-wise, he was up and ready to go. I think swinging the bat, he was a lot better, too. There was just something that seemed a little calmer with him.”

Still a young player at 24, Viciedo is predictably inconsistent. By sending a strong message like he did Friday and pulling Viciedo off the field, Ventura is hoping Viciedo learns from his mistakes.

“There’s part of that, of growing into what you’re going to be,” Ventura said. “To be able to do that for him, going through hard stuff is the hardest thing a player will do, especially when you’re young and being able to get through it.

“Eventually, when you get through it, it makes you better for the rest of your career.”

Crain streak ends:Reliever Jesse Crain allowed 1 run on 3 hits in the decisive eighth inning Saturday, ending a streak of 31 appearances without allowing an earned run.#147;He#146;s always going to come in kind of the toughest situations,#148; manager Robin Ventura said. #147;That eighth inning is one of those, depending on where that lineup is, it#146;s usually a nasty situation. It#146;s impressive, just kind of the run he#146;s been on.#148;The White Sox led 3-1 before the Indians rallied for their third straight win in the series. The Sox went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.#147;Guys on base, you have a chance to kind of put it out of reach, so to speak, but we couldn#146;t do it,#148; Ventura said. #147;Axe (starter Dylan Axelrod) pitched fine. It#146;s just one of those where he gave up a couple homers and they got to Jesse, which has been hard to do for a lot of people.#147;As far as everything else, it was a clean game and we played good defense. We kind of missed those opportunities and they come back and haunt you.#148;
