HIGHLAND PARK, IL (JUNE 25, 2013) -- The landscaped islands of the Central Avenue shopping district in downtown Highland Park will once again be transformed with beautiful Autumn Glass artworks beginning September 1, 2013. With over 55 artist submissions from all over the Midwest, only five have been chosen by Highland Park's Public Arts Advisory Group to be commissioned and have their work put on display this fall. These five artists will be commissioned $4,000 each, and the "Best in Show" artist will receive $1,000. The five Autumn Glass artworks will be on display from September through January 20th, 2014.
The Autumn Glass Artworks will create an atmosphere of vibrant autumn scenes made of glass, stained glass, fused glass, painted glass, and more. All works will be three feet high by five feet wide, double-sided so they are viewable from both street and sidewalk, and made to withstand outdoor weather conditions.
This lively exhibit is coming to town after the success of the Great Arts of Highland Park's 2013 Winter Mosaics project, which brought creativity and artistic interest to the Central Business District. The fifth in a series of ongoing art installations on display in Downtown Highland Park, including the Butterflies on Display, and The Magic Garden, these projects exemplify the Great Arts throughout the community. The themed 'decorate the streets with art' contests bring the community together for various efforts to make Highland Park a more interesting and lively place to visit and shop.
Highland Park is fast becoming known as the North Shore's destination for visual, performance, literary, and musical arts. The Highland Park Cultural Arts Network, or HPCAN, was designed to raise awareness of the uniqueness of the North Shore arts. They are dedicated to bringing mutual support to local cultural arts groups, as well as providing resources and information. A few cultural centers in Highland Park include The Art Center, Midwest Young Artists, Highland Park Poetry, and the Irina Makkai Classical Ballet & Dance School.
