Mannheim Road widening starts soon

Work on widening Mannheim Road through Des Plaines, Rosemont and Schiller Park near O’Hare International Airport will start soon, Gov. Pat Quinn’s office announced Thursday.

The $59 million project will be paid for with money from a 2009 construction program that raised vehicle fees and alcohol taxes, among other things.

About a mile and a half of the road will be widened from Route 19 to Interstate 190, and similar work will be done on a mile and a half between Interstate 190 and Route 72.

“This project will improve traffic flow in one of Chicagoland’s key transportation hubs,” Quinn said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Quinn also announced $1.8 million worth of road projects in DuPage County that will start within the next 30 days, his spokesman said.

About 2½ miles of North Avenue in Elmhurst and Villa Park will be resurfaced, and new LED traffic lights will be installed at intersections throughout the county.
