HIP Athletic Club celebrates one year of weekly runs, walks

Palatine's roads and trails have seen more runners in recent months thanks to the efforts of the Hoffman Estates, Inverness & Palatine Athletic Club. Scores of runners, walkers and other athletes have met every Saturday morning for the last year, providing training tips, coaching, encouragement and fellowship. Inverness resident Leo Tyska's idea quickly morphed into a fellowship of community members, some who began as non-runners and now have run 5Ks, 10Ks and more.

The club's first-year anniversary celebration will be held Saturday, June 22, following the regular 8 a.m. run in the eastern parking lot of Deer Grove East, on the Northwest corner of Hicks and Dundee roads.

A year ago, Tyska launched the club by urging a small group of local runners to invite everyone they knew. When he showed up at the assigned time, he found 40 people already there -- from families with children to couples with dogs -- ready to walk or run the trails of Deer Grove.

The group met all year, running -- when necessary -- through 8-degree weather and three inches of snow. After the Boston Marathon tragedy, they met again, running with candlelight to honor the lost lives.

HIP invites all community members to join the weekly gathering, which typically starts just before 7 a.m. on summer Saturdays and may include a coffee outing afterward.
