Chicago man dies in Calumet River

Authorities say one man died and another was rescued from the Calumet River on Chicago’s far South Side.

The 39-year-old was pulled from the 15 feet of water on Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, the Chicago man went into the water and tried to swim across but began to struggle. That’s when a friend jumped in to try to rescue him and had to be pulled from the water by emergency responders.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday they haven’t determined how the man died or released his name because they were still working to notify the next of kin.
