Mundelein Farmers Market ready to grow

An expanded Mundelein Farmers Market will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Fridays, June 14 to Oct. 11, downtown at Park Street and Seymour Avenue.

Many of the vendors have been with the market since it began in 2010, but there are new arrivals.

New vendors include The Cheese People of Quincy; Holcomb Hollow of Mundelein, which features preserves, pickled foods, root beer and sarsaparilla; and Midnight Sun Farm, which sells certified organic vegetables and chicken eggs.

Returning vendors include Arnold’s Meats; Apple Holler; Geneva Lakes Products; Tasty Vending, which sells kettle corn, lemonade, and snow cones. The Raging Kitchen food truck serving lobster rolls, wraps and cheesy mac also will be participating again this year.

A new addition is a tented seating area, where market-goers can relax, have a snack, and enjoy live music. Each week will feature local musicians, including Sipos & Young, Frank Bago, and Doug Blake. Student musicians from the area will also perform, including vocalist Emily Bednar and pianist Stephanie Spenk.

A special performance by Grand Dominion’s Lee Bassett Duo will be July 12, which is “Senior Day” at the market.

Other special events include “Celebrate Summer” June 21 featuring the Mundelein Police Department, free sunscreen, balloon artist, and face painting. “Kids Day” is scheduled Aug. 2 and includes a visit from the Mundelein Fire Department fire truck. “Fiesta Friday” and “Hawaiian Day” are also planned for the market.

Each week, a local nonprofit organization and business will be featured, including the Lions Club, Master Gardeners from University of Illinois Extension, Center for Wellness and First Midwest Bank.

Also new for 2013, the Mundelein Farmers Market was chosen to participate in the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s “Where Fresh Is” marketing program. Television and radio spots will promote the program, along with banners and other signage at the farmers market.

The 2013 Mundelein Farmers Market major sponsor is Advocate Condell Medical Center. Other sponsors include McDonald’s of Mundelein, GreenMark, Integrated Lake Management, and Visiting Angels. Sponsorship is listed on the Mundelein Farmers Market website and at the market each week.
