3 accused of murder, dumping body on expressway

Three people have been charged in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Highland Park man whose body was found along the Edens Expressway.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim said Friday that 20-year-old Benjamin Schenk, 17-year-old Philip Vatamaniuc and 17-year-old Michael Coffee have been charged with first-degree murder. All are from Highland Park.

Nerheim says the three met with the victim, Colin Nutter of Highland Park, to buy marijuana from him.

The prosecutor says they were in Nutter’s car Monday when Schenk shot him in the back of the head. The others helped put the body in the trunk and dump it, authorities allege.

The three are being held on $5 million bail each in the Lake County jail. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.
