Boomers bop Rascals 8-2

O’FALLON, Mo. — Riding the best outing by a starter this season, the Schaumburg Boomers bounced back to topple the River City Rascals 8-2 and win the road series Thursday night.

The Boomers were able to strike in the first inning for the third consecutive game, nabbing a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Chad Mozingo. The run was more than enough to support Mike Giovenco.

Giovenco matched a franchise record in becoming just the second pitcher in franchise history to strike out 10 batters in a game. Giovenco struck out the side twice and allowed 2 runs in 6 innings to pick up his first win of the season.

The Boomers added 2 runs in the third on a 2-run single from Brian McConkey to jump ahead 3-0 and scored in every inning from the third through the seventh. Gerard Hall and McConkey collected 3 hits each as the Boomers totaled 12 as a team.

The Boomers return home Friday night to open a three-game stint against the Joliet Slammers. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. with LHP Danny Jimenez (0-2, 5.57) on the hill for Schaumburg against RHP Jacob Sanchez (0-1, 1.29).
