9-year-old boy shot and wounded in Chicago

Police say a 9-year-old boy has been shot and critically wounded on Chicago’s South Side.

Police spokesman Jose Estrada says the boy was shot once around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the city’s Park Manor neighborhood.

He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Estrada had no other details and said the circumstances of the shooting were still under investigation.

No one was in custody.

The boy’s mother told reporters outside the hospital that “he’s fine.” She would not give her name.

The Chicago-Sun Times reports that other gun violence in the city on Wednesday claimed the lives of a man and a 15-year-old. Six others were wounded.
