‘Rec-mobile’ set to visit Gurnee Park District sites

The Gurnee Park District is adding wheels to its array of special events, programs and activities with its newest endeavor to support outdoor recreation throughout Gurnee.

The “Rec-mobile,” as the van is affectionately named, will visit 17 park locations throughout the summer to bring games, sports, arts and crafts to children in their own neighborhood parks. The activities are supervised by park district staff and geared toward students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

“This concept blossomed out of the district’s strategic planning process, which made the nationwide initiative No Child Left Inside a priority. Further, we hope to play a small part in bringing neighborhoods together, as well as creating a sense of pride in their local park,” said Scott Crowe, recreation superintendent for the district.

“This is an easy way to meet your neighbors and allows children to play outside in a safe environment that is close to home. We encourage parents/guardians to participate, too.”

This year, a fitness component is being added to a select number of parks. Attendees ages 16 and older will have the opportunity to participate in an outdoor boot camp class at four parks.

The Rec-mobile is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which is geared to fit in to families’ busy weekday schedules. For a complete list of Rec-Mobile dates and locations, as well as featured fitness days, visit www.gurneeparkdistrict.com/specialevents.
