KABUL, Afghanistan -- Afghan officials say insurgents have attacked a guesthouse used by the International Committee of the Red Cross in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, says the attack began Wednesday evening and that a gunbattle was still going on.

Provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal also confirms the attack on the guesthouse.

Both say an explosion preceded the attack, but it the source of the explosion was not immediately clear. They had no other details.

The Red Cross in Kabul says it cannot confirm the attack

An AP photographer at the scene says smoke can be seen from the vicinity of the guesthouse and shooting can be heard.
