Phillips in fine form for Antioch

Katie Phillips did it all for Antioch’s softball team Saturday.

The senior pitched a 3-hit shutout and jacked a 3-run homer, as the top-seeded Sequoits defeated No. 3 Lakes 7-0 in the Class 3A Antioch regional final.

Phillips struck out six and walked only one, while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Hannah Skoog was 3-for-3 with a double for Antioch (22-13), which will play Wauconda in Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal at Grayslake Central.

Kaylene Ressler went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sage Keyes’ RBI double in the second inning gave Phillips the only run she needed. Lakes threatened in the top of the fifth, putting two runners on base with one out. But Phillips got a called-third strike and then an swinging strike three to get out of the jam.

Lake Zurich 6, Glenbrook North 0: At Glenbrook South, Maria Schroeder went 3-for-3 with a home run and 2 triples, and Olivia Schneider pitched a 1-hitter against the No. 17 seed in the Class 4A regional final.

Schroeder also scored 3 runs, while Kaylee Grant had a double and 3 RBI. Caty Grahf doubled as well for No. 6 Lake Zurich (21-9), which will play New Trier in the Rolling Meadows sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Vernon Hills 7, Regina Dominican 4 (8 inn.): At St. Viator, the fourth-seeded Cougars prevailed in extra innings to capture the Class 3A regional championship, as they scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth.

Winning pitcher Jenn Claussen struck out 15 and allowed only 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

Vernon Hills (10-15), which trailed 3-1 before scoring three times in the sixth, got a 3-for-4 effort from freshman Danielle Comitor, who doubled twice and knocked in a run. Izzy Cirone went 2-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI for the Cougars, while Steffany Froman was also 2-for-4. Kristina Kliver had a double and an RBI.

Vernon Hills will play Chicago Northside in Tuesday’s 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal at Grayslake Central.

Wauconda 5, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock North, Alex Kinnamon’s 2 doubles and 2 RBI helped the top-seeded Bulldogs win the Class 3A regional final over the No. 3 seed.

Brooke Sefcik (2-for-3, double) and Maggie LePage (double, 2 RBI) also delivered at the plate for Wauconda (21-12), which plays Antioch at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grayslake Central sectional semifinals.

Winning pitcher Kayla Wedl fired a 2-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.
