FLORENCE, Ky. -- The Florence Freedom scored runs in the fifth inning to take control en route to a 10-4 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers in the rubber game of a road series on Thursday night.
Schaumburg opened the scoring on a deep single to right off the bat of Steve McQuail in the top of the first, bringing home Frank Pfister.
Florence opened a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third.
The Boomers were able to tie the game on an RBI single from Michael Valadez in the fifth, which scored Mike Demperio, who had tripled.
The big blow for Florence in the fifth was a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Skellie to put the game away.
The slam came against Danny Jimenez, who suffered the loss after allowing 8 runs in 5 innings. Schaumburg registered 4 extra-base hits, a season high. Valadez finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.
The road trip will continue this weekend as the Boomers open a three-game series with the 2012 West Division champion Gateway Grizzlies on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Cody Griebling (0-0, 3.00) is scheduled to start for the Boomers opposite right-hander JaVaun West (0-0, 1.80).Copyright © 2014 Paddock Publications, Inc.
