NIU giving honorary degree to Thompson

By

Former Gov. James R. Thompson is being given an honorary law degree by Northern Illinois University. Thompson was a Republican governor from 1977 to 1991. He will be presented with the degree during the College of Law's commencement ceremony on Saturday in DeKalb. He's also serving as commencement speaker.

The university says criteria for receiving an honorary law degree include "having a distinguished record of achievement in law."

Thompson in 2006 gave a tribute to the late NIU law professor emeritus Francis X. Riley, a longtime friend and mentor.
