Westminster falls in Class 1A sectional

It wasn’t exactly the way Westminster Christian’s softball team hopes its first trip to a sectional semifinal would go, but the Warriors were there nonetheless.

Westminster managed just 4 hits and committed 6 errors Wednesday in a 20-2 loss to Gardner South Wilmington in the semifinals of the Class 1A Gilman Iroquois West sectional, played in downstate Onarga.

“We had a fantastic season,” said Warriors’ coach John Wedell. “This is just my third year coaching and there has definitely been progression for our program. This is our first double-digit win season and we won our first regional. I’m really proud of the girls for what they have accomplished and look forward to next year.”

In Wednesday’s loss, Ally Hieschler went 2-for-2 for the Warriors (12-9) and Becca Fugiel drove in the team’s runs.
