Lightning causes fire in attic of Batavia home

By Jessica Cilella

A lightning strike caused the attic of a home in Batavia to catch on fire Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Firefighters were called to a home on the 900 block of Ekman Drive shortly after noon, said Battalion Chief Jami White of the Batavia Fire Department.

The fire was contained primarily to the attic, White said, but there was water damage throughout the house.

No one was home at the time except for the family's dog, which was able to get out safely, White said.

One firefighter had minor injuries and was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment, White said. He has since been released.

The fire was extinguished about an hour after firefighters were dispatched to the scene, White said. The cost of damages is likely around $200,000, he said.
