Walking with Soldiers: The Civil War Tour will be held May 25

Did you know that a Naperville carpenter and homebuilder had an important role in the Battle of Gettysburg? You'll learn all about Levi Shafer and his contributions during a special guided tour of the Naperville Cemetery in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. “Walking with Soldiers: The Civil War Tour” will be held from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday, May 25 and begins at the Naper Settlement Visitor Center, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville.

“Because 2013 is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, we thought it was an opportunity to let people know about Naperville's place in Civil War history,” said Cindy Lackore, Lead Museum Educator at Naper Settlement. “Many Union soldiers are buried in Naperville Cemetery and we'll talk about them, but a Confederate soldier is also buried there.”

Visitors will also learn about Dr. Horace Potter and his unusual headstone; the monuments constructed to honor war veterans; and mourning customs of the time period.

Tickets are $12 per person; $10 Naperville Heritage Society Sustaining Members. For ages 10 to adult. (Some historical material may be too graphic for younger audiences.) Reservations are recommended. Limited tickets are available at the door. Call (630) 420-6010 or visit www.napersettlement.com.
