A great season for Mundelein’s softball team came to a shocking end Tuesday.
Glenbrook South, the No. 17 seed in the 21-team Class 4A Rolling Meadows sectional complex, upset the third-seeded Mustangs 6-4 in the Glenbrook South regional semifinals.
The Titans — who will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between No. 6 Lake Zurich and No. 11 Glenbrook North — snapped a 4-4 tie with 2 runs in the sixth inning.
Mundelein (25-11) got a double from Lauren Fairweather.
Wauconda 16, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, freshman Kayla Wedl fired her first career no-hitter, as the top-seeded Bulldogs opened the Class 3A state tournament with a five-inning win over the fifth-seeded Blue Streaks.
It was the 20th win for Wauconda (20-12), which advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between Harvard and Woodstock North.
Wedl struck out 12 and walked one, while helping her own cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and 3 RBI. Lauren Nee led Wauconda’s 17-hit attack, as she went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and double. The winners got 2-for-3 efforts from Lexie Redmann, Brooke Sefcik (double), Megan Luchowski, Megan Grobelny, Maggie LePage and Kennedy Wright. Luchowski no-hit Woodstock during the regular season.
Antioch 10, Grayslake Central 0: At Antioch, Kaytee Keefe’s solo home run in the first inning was all the offense Katie Phillips needed in the Class 3A regional semifinal.
Phillips allowed 1 hit and struck out six in a five-inning complete game, and Keefe finished 4-for-4 with 3 RBI, as Antioch (21-13) earned a berth in Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between No. 2 Johnsburg and No. 3 Lakes.
Jessica Pedersen was 3-for-4 for the Sequoits, and Jessica Tyrell (double) and Mackenzie Thomas (triple) were both 2-for-3.
Caitlin Flary’s second-inning single was the only hit for No. 4 Grayslake Central.
Barrington 10, Prospect 0: At Buffalo Grove, Loren Krzysko belted her 40th career homer, as the Fillies shut out the Knights 10-0 in five innings in a Class 4A regional semifinal.
The senior third baseman went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles and her 16th home run of the season, placing her 12th on the all-time IHSA list for a single-season homers.
It was Barrington’s 45th homer as a team, which puts the Fillies at eighth place on that all-time list.
Sophomore Keenan Dolezal (24-1) fired a 1-hit shutout with 5 strikeouts as the Fillies (31-1) advanced to Saturday’s championship game against the winner of today’s semifinal between No. 8 Buffalo Grove and No. 9 Loyola.
Krista Moore, Katie Dehnert, Erin Ward and Sam Rosenfeld each hit for Barrington as Fillies coach Perry Perry Peterson collected career win No. 650.
The only hit by Prospect (9-20) was a leadoff single to center by Maggie Pancini in the fourth inning.
Fremd 13, Libertyville 0 (5 inn.): At Libertyville, the Vikings (23-7) exploded for their biggest inning of the season, scoring all 13 runs against the No. 13 Wildcats in the bottom of the third.
No. 4 Fremd advanced to Saturday’s championship of the Libertyville Class 4A regional to face the winner of today’s game between No. 5 Carmel and No. 12 Stevenson.
Fremd senior catcher Kristine Herdegen belted a home run (her seventh of the season) and a double for her 4 RBI in the third inning as she went 2-for-4 with a walk and 2 runs.
Other multiple hitters for Fremd were seniors Mandi Matsumoto (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Ashlynne Schwantz (2-for-3, 2 run, 2 RBI).
Schwantz (22-4) struck out the first eight batters she faced and finished with 11. She had a perfect game until Libertyville’s Margaret Haws singled with two outs in the fourth inning.
