Wheeling hangs on at Warren

Wheeling wasn’t interested in going quietly.

The Wildcats got a 3-for-4 effort from Nick Ricciardi, 2-for-4 efforts from Brenden Spillane and Angelo Deblasio (2 RBI) and held on for a 6-5 victory over host Warren in Class 4A regional quarterfinal baseball action Monday.

Ryan Bendewald struck out 11 and earned the win for Wheeling, and Spillane picked up a save as Warren rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Jake Jordan contributed a double in a 13-hit attack for Wheeling (11-19).

The Wildcats advance to a Wednesday regional semifinal matchup at Carmel.

Buffalo Grove 7, Waukegan 6: Buffalo Grove trailed 6-0 early in its St. Viator regional play-in game at Waukegan, but the Bison didn’t buckle.

They scored 1 run in the fourth then had 3-run rallies in both the fifth and sixth while shutting out the Bulldogs the rest of the way.

Matt Blankshain, Josh Guertler and Paul Burke as the Bison made the most of 5 hits, thanks in part to 6 Waukegan errors.

Senior Adam Kowalski pitched 3 scoreless relief innings for BG (11-16), and sophomore Justin Hasek didn’t allow a hit while earning a save by tossing the seventh inning.

Leadoff man Dan Levato scored twice, going 1-for-2 with 2 walks.

BG advances to a Wednesday game against top seed Mundelein at St. Viator.

Highland Park 10, Hersey 3: C.J. Reichel went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, but the visiting Huskies saw their season come to an end as Highland Park’s David Hochstadt, Matt Lowy and Zach Zamost each homered.

The Giants advance to a 4:30 p.m. Wednesday game against Glenbrook South at Deerfield.

Brendan Starr went 2-for-2 with a walk for Hersey (13-20).

Von Steuben 7, Maine West 5: The host Warriors fell short as Von Steuben’s Chris Martinez tripled and doubled.

Leyden 7, Chicago Foreman 0: The host Eagles advanced by forfeit.

Glenbard East 10, Conant 1: The host Rams ousted the Cougars and earned a Wednesday game against St. Charles East in the Geneva regional.
