Sclafani triple caps Montini rally

It wasn’t Alyssa Sclafani’s 10th homer of the year, but it may have been a bigger hit than the 9 long balls.

Sclafani, Montini’s freshman catcher, hit a bases-clearing 3-run triple to deep center field, rallying the Broncos to a 5-3 win over Antioch at Saturday’s Bandits Jamboree in Rosemont.

Sclafani’s blast, with the Broncos trailing 3-1, just missed going out in the 220-foot dimensions to center. She also scored on the play when the throw sailed high.

“I was focused before I went to the plate, and I knew what I had to do,” Sclafani said. “It was a great feeling.”

Fellow freshman Zoe Dannenberg (7-2) threw 223 innings shutout innings for the win. She worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth, then escaped the same situation in the seventh with big help from her defense. With two out shortstop Cristina Barrett made a diving stop of a hard-hit ball, threw home and Sclafani executed the game-ending run down with a throw to third.

Barrett was just released Thursday from the hospital after suffering a hyperextended elbow.

“It’s nice to have her back,” Montini coach Richie Costante said.

Barret also had 2 hits and scored twice for Montini (24-10), which snapped a four-game losing streak in a week of challenging nonconference contests.

“I set these games up against quality teams to get us ready for the playoffs,” Costante said. “It’s nice to come ot on top of a close game, because we haven’t had that luxury lately.”
