After DUI, Huntley coach suspended for rest of season

By Jerry Fitzpatrick

The District 158 Board of Education resolved at its Thursday meeting to suspend Huntley baseball coach Andy Jakubowski for the remainder of the season, including playoffs.

Jakubowski, 40, was arrested Sunday morning in Lake in the Hills and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol content greater than .08 and speeding.

The eighth-year coach reported the arrest to school officials on Monday and began a self-imposed suspension from coaching on Wednesday.

The board's resolution to suspend, adopted by a 6-1 vote, prohibits Jakubowski from attending games, practices and the awards night.

"I was hoping for a better circumstance, but I respect the board's decision," Jakubowski said Friday morning. "I am sorry for what my players have had to endure because of my bad judgment, but I know they will overcome adversity and be successful in the end."

District 158 superintendent Dr. John Burkey declined to comment, citing it as a personnel matter.

Without Jakubowski, Huntley (23-5), the No. 1 team in the Daily Herald's Top 20 for the last three weeks, lost Thursday's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division finale to McHenry, 2-1. That loss prevented the Red Raiders from winning the FVC Valley title outright. They instead settled for a split title with Crystal Lake South.

Huntley, the No. 1 seed at the upcoming Class 4A DeKalb regional, is scheduled to open the playoffs next Wednesday at 4 p.m. against the winner of Monday's play-in game between No. 5 Rockford Jefferson and No. 4 Larkin.

Assistant coach Matt Sassi will act as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, Jakubowski said.
