5 abuse lawsuits filed against Joliet diocese

Five new lawsuits have been filed against the Diocese of Joliet alleging sexual abuse by priests and a teacher.

A Chicago law firm filed the lawsuits Tuesday in Will County on behalf of victims who were between the ages of 8 and 16 at the time of the abuse in the 1970s and 1980s. The Herald-News in Joliet reports that the victims were at churches, a school and a seminary in Bolingbrook, Joliet and Monee. The accused are no longer involved in ministry.

The Diocese of Joliet says it hasn't been served with the lawsuits yet and would respond after reviewing them. The diocese also urged anyone abused as a child by a member of the clergy or diocese to notify authorities and the diocese.
