Bicyclist killed on Higgins Road near Route 53 ramp

By

A female bicyclist was killed Tuesday morning after apparently crossing Higgins Road against a red light at the exit ramp from northbound Route 53, Illinois State Police said this morning.

The collision was reported at 9:06 a.m. According to witnesses, a male driver was turning eastbound onto Higgins Road from the Route 53 exit ramp when the bicyclist crossed in front of him from the center median.

While the collision remains under investigation, witnesses have indicated it was the bicyclist who disobeyed the traffic signal, an Illinois State Police spokesman said. This makes the possibility of a citation being filed against the male driver seem less likely at the present time, he added.

The woman was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village where she was pronounced dead. She has not been identified.

Schaumburg police assisted with traffic, which was snarled at the bottom of the exit ramp.
