North Boone ousts Westminster Christian

The youth of the Westminster Christian baseball team showed Monday in the team’s regional opener.

Warriors coach Tim Dunderdale said only two players had played in the postseason before Friday’s Class 2A Westminster Christian regional play-in game.

No. 4 seed Westminster managed 4 four hits as its season ended in a 5-2 loss to No. 5 North Boone.

“The bottom line we have a very young, inexperienced group,” Dunderdale said.

Sophomore Tyler Mamrot went 2-for-4 with a double for the Warriors (10-10). Luke Weston, also a sophomore, went 0-for-3, but drove in a pair of runs with groundballs. Senior Will Woodhouse, who reached on an error to lead off the first, scored on another error on a groundball hit by Weston.

Mamrot doubled to lead off the third and stole third. He scored on a groundout to short by Weston.

North Boone pitcher Jason Fidder pitched through 4 Vikings errors and 4 walks to come away with the victory. The junior allowed just 1 earned run and struck out 4.

“He started all three regional games in his career and he was 0-2. Today he put us on his back,” said North Boone coach Dean Dinsmore, who earned his first regional win in four years with the Vikings. “Just an amazing effort from him. He’s a really good kid that deserves it.”

The Vikings (7-15), who will play top-seeded Aurora Central Catholic in a Wednesday semifinal, scored once in the first and second. The game was tied 2-2 in the fifth when North Boone had 3 consecutive singles from Vic Catella, Brad Giss and Zach Horton to bring in 2 runs for a 4-2 lead. The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth on am RBI double from Rodney Taylor.

Clay DeHaan suffered the loss for the Warriors. The junior went 5 innings, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 4.
