Des Plaines man dies after police chase

By

A Des Plaines man died in a St. Louis emergency room Friday after being shot during a chase with police, a Mercy Hospital spokesman confirmed Sunday.

Jose H. Garcia, 49, was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds after the car chase ended in Eureka, Mo., according to a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Police in Eureka said they responded once the chase reached their boundaries, but deferred to the Missouri State Highway Patrol for comment. State troopers could not be reached Sunday to provide details on the chase or the shooting.

The newspaper reported that Garcia initially fled from Illinois police after a traffic stop Friday and Missouri troopers picked up the chase when he was spotted on Interstate 44 southwest of St. Louis. The report said officers tried to stop his car with tire spikes and fired multiple shots when Garcia pointed a gun at them.

Illinois State Police confirmed the traffic stop Friday in southwestern Illinois, but did not have any details Sunday about Garcia or the ensuing chase.
