Huntley grad Popenfoose wins SEC shot put title

By

Auburn University junior Marcus Popenfoose of Huntley won the Southeast Conference shot put title at the conference meet in Columbia, Mo. Saturday afternoon.

Popenfoose and Tennessee sophomore Matthew Hoty each had registered an attempt of 61 feet, 11 inches through five rounds, but Hoty was the leader heading to the final round because he had attained the distance in fewer tries.

Popenfoose prevailed in his sixth and final attempt (62-2¼) to win the SEC championship.

An Illinois high school state champion in the discus for Huntley in 2010, Popenfoose placed second in the state in the shot put in 2009 and 2010.
