FreeTunes gives library card holders songs

Love country? Rock? Alternative? Big band? If you enjoy music, especially free music, then you’ll love FreeTunes from the Schaumburg Township District Library (STDL). All you need is your STDL card to download three songs per week, every week, from a selection of thousands. You can search by artist, album or song, using a “smart” search box that will pull up anything containing your key words. And … you can use Advanced Search to hunt by composer or genre.

Why pay to download tunes? FreeTunes is just another great benefit of having a library card!

Here’s how it works. Go to the library’s website at www.schaumburglibrary.org and click on “eBooks and Digital Media” on the right side, then select “Music” and “FreeTunes by Freegal.” From there, just follow the prompts to get your three free songs. Simply click the “Download Now” link, select “Save,” and indicate where you want to save the song. Anytime you click on the “Download now” link, even if you cancel the download, the download counts toward your weekly allotment. Just think … if you download three tunes per week, you will get 156 free songs for the year!

The downloads on the website are in the MP3 format and will work with any MP3 player, including iPod, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs. Please be aware that songs labeled “explicit” by the music label have been filtered out; however, there will be some songs which contain some explicit content.

If you enjoy music, from twanging banjos to fiery electric guitars or sweet violins; whether it hails from 1940 or 2013, FreeTunes is for you. Check it out at www.schaumburglibrary.org, and let the music play!

If you prefer your music live, with real people and instruments, come to the library’s free concerts. From autumn to spring, the concerts are held indoors in the Central Library’s audiovisual theater. From June through August, enjoy weekly concerts under the summer skies in Schaumburg’s Town Square. Bring a blanket, lawn chair, snacks and drinks for fun evenings of entertainment for all ages.

This year’s summer concert series kicks off Monday, June 3, with the Jay Witcher Orchestra. Subsequent concerts include Fast Eddie and the Corvettes (1960s music), AcRock (a cappella rock-n-roll), the Reunion Jazz Orchestra, Banjo Buddies and much more. The annual Battle of the Bands for teens will be held Tuesday, July 23.

For a full listing, see the library’s June-July Program Guide which will be mailed to Schaumburg Township residents in late May.
