Czech school named for Anton Cermak

By

A school in the Czech Republic is to be named after the late Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak, who was assassinated while in office.

The naming will coincide with the 140th anniversary of Cermak’s birth.

The Anton Cermak School will be in Prague, which is one of Chicago’s Sister Cities.

Cermak came to the U.S. from what is now the Czech Republic in 1874. He was elected mayor in 1931 and was in office when he was assassinated in 1933 in Miami. The assassin was targeting Franklin Roosevelt, who hadn’t yet assumed the presidency.

Cermak previously was an Illinois State representative and president of the Cook County Board.
