BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Kane County Cougars were shut out for the first time this season, managing only 5 hits in a 4-0 loss to the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Wednesday.

Aaron Newcomb (1-1) limited the Cougars (14-15) to 3 hits over 6 innings. Only two Cougars reached second base against Newcomb — Willson Contreras with one out in the fifth after a walk and a single, and Dan Vogelbach, who doubled in the sixth.

The Bees (11-16) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth against Pierce Johnson (1-2). Kyle Johnson led off with a single and scored on a hit from Wade Hinkle. With two outs, Wendell Soto delivered a 3-run double that put the Bees up by 4.

Johnson went 4 innings, while relievers Justin Amlung and Matt Iannazzo each tossed a pair of scoreless innings.

Cam Bedrosian recorded the final nine outs for the Bees with 4 strikeouts.

The Cougars and Bees battle in Game 2 of their three-game series Thursday at 6:30. Right-hander Tayler Scott (1-1) starts for the Cougars against lefty Ryan Crowley (2-0).
