Biggby Coffee closes in Arlington Heights

Biggby Coffee, which provided that extra jolt of caffeine to coffee lovers, closed its doors this week in downtown Arlington Heights.

The franchise may have had “landlord-tenant issues,” said Charles Witherington-Perkins, director of planning and community development for Arlington Heights. He has been working with the real estate broker to fill the retail space.

The owner of Biggby's local franchise has move to California and no forwarding information was available. It's also unclear how many workers lost their jobs at the store, Witherington-Perkins said.

“It's sad to see any business close, but it's the cyclical nature of the restaurant business,” he said.

Officials at Biggby Coffee's corporate office in East Lansing, Mich., were not immediately available for comment.

Coffee lovers also faced changes last month when Caribou Coffee closed some stores and opened others as Peet's Coffee & Tea.
