A state commission that aims to make college more affordable is expanding a program for students working on college applications.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission has turned its College Application Week into Illinois College Application Month. This year, it'll be in October and any high school students can participate.

Commission officials say they want to encourage students who may apply late in the process or might not apply at all.

Eric Zarnikow is the head of the commission. He says students who begin the application process early and have support are better equipped to make time and better decisions.

The commission is encouraging school administrators to register their schools.

Last year 33 high schools participated in the week.
