Senior Ashlynne Schwantz and sophomore Joanna Josten combined for a 12-1 Mid-Suburban League softball victory over host Hoffman Estates in five innings Tuesday.
Winning pitcher Schwantz (9-3) struck out three in the first two innings and Josten recorded 4 strikeouts in the final three innings.
Leigh Farina and Tracy Welninski had homers for Fremd (10-6, 5-1) while Mandi Matsumoto tripled. Teammates Kristine Herdegen and Michelle Mazur each doubled and freshman Alysia Garcia was 2-for-3..
Sam Acosta (2-for-3) and Jordyn Fera (2-for-3, RBI) led Hoffman (3-12-1, 3-4).
Rolling Meadows 5, Wheeling 3 (9 inn.): Meadows senior Sara Brunlieb (8-9) struck out a season-high 12 and tossed a 5-hitter for the win.
A one-out double by Grace Skorin (2-for-5) to right center field scored Sam Anderson (3-for-5) and Hannah Whidden for the winning runs in the top of the ninth inning. Whidden and Anderson had reached with base hits.
Rolling Meadows (11-9, 2-6) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth when freshman Kika Mahoe doubled home a run and Emily Hattory had an RBI fielder’s choice grounder.
Sarah Caprio went 2-for-4 for Meadows while key hitters for Wheeling (5-11, 0-8) were Nikki Mikosz (RBI double), Emily Walker (RBI double) and Sara Kern (RBI triple).
Hersey 6, Prospect 2: Prospect (3-13, 1-6) and Hersey (4-10, 2-6) finished their game that was postponed by rain on April 15 in Mt. Prospect.
Play resumed in the top of the second inning with Hersey leading 2-0 with runners on second and third and one out.
Huskies leadoff hitter Alyssa Zaucha walked to load the bases and Jessica Schmiederer doubled to deep right center to clear the bases and give Hersey a 5-0 lead.
With two outs, Angela Schmiederer singled to score her sister from second among it 6-0.
Prospect answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the third when Emma Riordan reached on an error and came home on Rachel Trebswether’s triple.
Trebswether then tagged and scored on Michele Molini’s sacrifice fly to left.
Prospect went on to load the bases with two out, but Hersey pitcher Michelle Bolker escaped further damage with a groundout to shortstop.
Rachel Fang relieved Bolker when the Knights loaded the bases again in the fourth inning with one out. Fang ended the threat with a popout to second and a strikeout.
Ally Schuldt (3-for-4) led the offense fro Prospect while
Alysia Zaucha went 2 for 4 for Hersey. Gina Fasolo also doubled for Hersey.
“I was really impressed with how well (freshman) Delilah Malczewski (4 hits, 2 runs in 4) did on the mound today,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair. “We were forced to make a pitching change and I had to put my freshman pitcher into a tough situation. After that second inning, she held Hersey in check and gave us a chance to get back into the game. And, Ally Schuldt is really starting to prove that she can play in the Mid-Suburban League.”
Maine West 12, Niles North 2 (5 inn.): Senior Ariel Valles earned the win as the Warriors (10-4) improved to 3-1 in the CSL North.
Recent freshman call-up Kayla Pociejewski caught the game and went 1-for-2 with a 2-run homer.
Warriors senior Hanna Udischas belted a grand slam and teammate Sadie Argus added a homer. Other key hitters for West were Holly Wengerski (4-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Brie Montmarquette (2-for-3, 2 runs).
St. Viator 4, Resurrection 1: Host St. Viator (4-16) trailed 1-0 as Sam Hogan came on in relief with the bases loaded and only 1 out in the third inning.
Not only did the junior hurler get out the inning without a run, she proceeded to retire 13 of the final 15 batters with 8 strikeouts.
Hogan also drove in a run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. It would have cleared the bases of not for a spectacular diving catch by Resurrection right fielder Elena Hernandez.
The Lions’ Kristen Hackel singled home Michelle Presslak in the second and Lauren Prazuch in the fourth. Presslak and Prazuch had each singled to reach base. A single by Taylor Noll made it 4-1.
