On May 11, volunteers, clients, staff and other Kenneth Young Center supporters will walk or run in hopes of changing the lives of those struggling with mental illness and aging.
Last year the Center provided services to over 5,800 local seniors, reflecting the need to raise money, awareness and support for the mental health and senior services that Kenneth Young Center provides the Northwest suburban community.
Registration for this family- and pet-friendly event starts at 8 a.m. in the Level 4 area of Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village. At 9 a.m., walkers and runners begin the 3-mile course.
Although the event has changed slightly throughout the years, the walk remains a community event for the entire family. Companies can support the walk while creating corporate visibility and enhancing team morale. For information contact Fran Geraci at (847) 524-8800, ext. 103 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
One out of four American families has a relative with a mental illness. With many budget cuts KYC relies on individual and business donations.
"(KYC) is a vital part of our community," said Marcia Hirsch, walk committee member. "It benefits each and every one of us, if not directly in some manner. Kenneth Young Center helps schoolchildren, our seniors, the disabled, those with temporary life setbacks and those with extended issues to work through."
The walk is three miles and can be completed as a walk, run or leisurely stroll. During registration attendees can enjoy food and beverages sponsored by GFS Foods and Pepsi Beverage Co., warm up with Zumba and visit the family fun area which features face painting, balloons and games.
Last year, the walk raised more than $30,000 to support critical, lifesaving services. Kenneth Young Center hopes to raise even more money to offset the fact that the need for services is increasing while state funding is dramatically decreasing. While there is no registration fee to participate donations are encouraged. Walkers can raise money individually or form a team.
