Counselors will be available today for students at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove coping with the death of a 13-year-old classmate killed Friday when she collided with a vehicle while rollerblading. “I think the whole community is mourning that something so terrible could happen,” said Harter school parent Kevin O’Brien. “Their lives just changed in an instant. A special kind of community chorus, Voices of Hope, performed in Naperville Sunday to show that while cancer changes the life of those it touches, so too does music. Voices of Hope is comprised of members of the Naperville Men’s Glee Club and other singers who have been affected in some way by cancer. Full story.
Since Arlene Mulder announced in September that she wouldn’t be running for another term as village president, the longtime Arlington Heights mayor has been through a long series of last events and public goodbyes. Sunday was the last of the lasts as Mulder was celebrated with a commemorative day in her honor and a three-hour open house for residents and community leaders to give their thanks and well wishes. The more than 300 high school athletes who attended Sunday’s Daily Herald Prep Sports Excellence banquet see each other most often as opponents. They face off on basketball courts, football fields and baseball diamonds; they size each other up in tennis matches, around golf tees and across wrestling mats. After playing nearly 60 minutes in Saturday’s triple-overtime marathon win, Kirk Hinrich hobbled out of the locker room. The big question for the Blackhawks going into their first-round playoff series with Minnesota is the status of center Dave Bolland. Bolland missed the last three games of the regular season after suffering what is believed to be a groin injury three minutes into last Monday’s game at Vancouver.
