Funeral arrangements have been set for a seventh-grader from Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove who was killed while rollerblading last week.
Caitlyn Phillips, 13, of Elburn, died Friday after colliding with a car while skating along East Reader Street in Elburn, according to police.
Caitlyn entered the intersection at North Third Street and, apparently unable to stop, collided with the left front corner of a vehicle, witnesses told police. No charges or citations have been filed.
Visitation for Caitlyn will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Calvary West Church, 1600 Beta Drive, Sugar Grove. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday following a visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Russ Hurst will officiate. Interment will follow at Blackberry Township Cemetery.
Gayle Haas, an administrator at the church, said Caitlyn worked in the nursery on Sunday mornings. She said Caitlyn was "always willing to serve" and "genuinely very helpful."
Kaneland Community Unit School District 302 Superintendent Jeff Schuler said none of Caitlyn's teachers were available to talk Monday because they were helping support students.
"They're really coping with a lot of the same feelings of grief that the students are," he said. "I really want their attention focused internally."
Schuler said it's a "tragic loss" any time a member of the district passes away.
"We are working hard to support the entire school community today and will continue to do so throughout the week," he said.
Additional counselors and staff members were on hand at the school, with the library being the primary location for students to receive support. Counselors were also checking classrooms throughout the day to help students.
Caitlyn is survived by her parents, Gary and Crystal; sisters Jordan and Taylor; a nephew, Noah; her grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Caitlyn's name. Checks can be made out to the "Caitlyn Phillips Memorial" and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119. Conley Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
On its website, the school district directed parents, students and teachers to www.conleyoutreach.org for information regarding teens and grieving.
