After the Flood: What West Chicago residents need to know

West Chicago, Illinois: April 24, 2013 – Following the 5.5 inch rainfall on April 17 – 18, 2013, the City of West Chicago experienced numerous road closures and localized flooding. Many homes had water in basements or other living areas. In addition to destroyed property there are a number of health hazards that can occur in flooded homes. Please visit the Protect DuPage website at http://www.dupageco.org/protectdupage/ to download information on these hazards.

Additionally, the City would like to warn residents to be on alert for “storm chasing” contractors looking to scam unwitting home and business owners following the disaster. The Illinois Attorney General's Office recommends verifying that contractors have the necessary insurance and required permits. Also recommended is taking extra caution before making any decisions to repair or rebuild damaged or destroyed property and avoiding the rush to sign a contract or make a down payment.

If someone suspects unscrupulous contractors are attempting to scam area residents, they may call the Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438. For more information visit the Illinois Attorney General website at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/.
