Complete effort powers Lake Zurich

Nick Jones homered twice, Austin Foote struck out 12 in 6 innings of 1-hit ball, and Lake Zurich’s baseball team “finally put all three phases of the game together,” coach Gary Simon said following an 11-1 win over visiting Zion-Benton on Wednesday.

Jones gave Foote all the runs he needed with the first of his two 2-run homers in the first inning. Joe Pizzolato doubled twice, while Anthony Drago was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and 2 walks for the Bears. James DeGeorge also doubled for Lake Zurich (3-11), which ended the North Suburban Lake Division game by scoring 3 runs in the sixth.

The only run allowed by Foote (1-1) was unearned.

Stevenson 2, Libertyville 0: Matt Allen threw a complete-game five-hitter, striking out seven for the host Patriots in the North Suburban Lake contest.

Austin Black (double, run scored), Jimmy Marchese, Greg Voss (double, RBI) and Zach Novoselsky all went all 2-for-3 for Stevenson (7-6, 4-1).

Evan Skoug tripled for Libertyville, which allowed solo runs in the first and sixth innings.

Antioch 6, Grant 5: The visiting Sequoits won the North Suburban Prairie showdown in eight innings.

Antioch (7-4, 2-1) was led offensively by Matt DeJong, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Adam Harvey, who was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI. Dave Rzewnicki earned the win in relief of starter David Meade, who allowed 5 runs but none earned in 5innings.

Grant got 2 hits apiece from Jake Ring and Ryan Noda. Noda tripled, while Brent Spohr doubled and knocked in 3 runs.

Jacobs 4, Grayslake Central 2: The Golden Eagles broke open a 2-2 Fox Valley Conference game by taking advantage of 2 walks, 2 hit batsmen and an infield single in the fifth.

Kyle Balling, Freddie Landers and Pat Burba had the only hits for Grayslake Central.

“The kids battled, but we just could not muster any consistent offense,” Rams coach Troy Whalen said. “If you can hold a team like Jacobs to 4 runs, you’ve got to find a way to win that game.”
