Lions continue Smelt Fry Dinner in honor of former member

Lion Joe Groth always had two passions in life. First was fishing and second was community service.

About three years ago he combined these two passions to benefit the community of South Elgin by organizing the first of several annual Smelt Fries. Lion Joe was in the middle of planning his next smelt fry when he fell ill and passed away last month.

In his honor, the South Elgin Lions Club will be hosting its annual Smelt Fry Dinner this Friday on April 26th. Dinner will be served between 5 to 8 p.m. and cost $8.00 each. Carry out is available. Dinner includes smelt, fries, coleslaw, dinner roll, tartar sauce and butter. For those who do not like smelt, a hotdog dinner is be available for $2. Beverages are not included; however a cash bar will be open with $1 draft beers. The South Elgin Lions Club is located at 500 Fulton Avenue, South Elgin, IL. If you have questions, please call Lion Gary Deihs at 847-888-9575.
