Vernon Hills man discovers sink hole on property

Mike Finkelman said he may have the first sinkhole ever recorded in Vernon Hills.

The 3-foot by 3-foot hole on the 900 block of Saugatuck Trail is “pretty deep”, Finkelman said, but he isn’t sure how deep it actually is.

“I’m not gonna go in there and look,” he said with a laugh. “It’s definitely a sink hole. Everyone is surprised when they see it.”

Vernon Hills and Lake County officials have come out to inspect it, he said, and they put up barricades to protect people from falling in.

“It’s underneath the sidewalk near my front lawn,” he said. “I called the police because it’s kind to dangerous to leave open and I didn’t want anyone to fall in. They looked at it and said they have never seen a sink hole in the village before.”
