St. Edward will go for Brieger’s 200th Saturday

Career win No. 200 will have to wait another day for St. Edward girls soccer coach Tim Brieger.

The only coach in Green Wave girls soccer history needed just 2 wins on Friday to reach the milestone but after a scoreless tie against Streamwood and a 3-0 win over Genoa-Kingston in the Green Wave Invitational at Greg True Field, Brieger found himself stuck on 199.

There’s a chance for Brieger to earn the milestone at some point Saturday, but one person who was proud to prevent it from happening was Brieger’s good friend, Streamwood coach Matt Polovin.

“Tim is a good friend of mine,” Polovin said. “I look forward to him getting that feat just not against me, though.”

Brieger’s response: “Sounds like Matt. Matt and I have known each other for years. I love playing Streamwood and it was a great game, it was a nice a test for us, they’re a bigger school than us.”

In that game, goalie Paige Dykstra recorded the first of 2 shutouts on the day, making 2 saves while Nathalie Guindon record 5 saves for the Sabres.

Dykstra record 2 more saves against Genoa-Kingston. Allison Kruk assisted twice and scored a goal while Chelsea Gnan scored twice on those assists and assisted on Kruk’s goal for the Green Wave (2-1-1).

“We’re shaking off a little bit more rust, getting a little sharper and hopefully it continues that way,” said Brieger.

As for win No. 200, while it didn’t occur on Friday, when it does happens, Brieger will take it all in stride.

“It’s funny, it’s not just me, it just so happens I’m the only coach of the girls’ program so I’ve been telling the girls it’s their 200,” said Brieger. “We’ve (had) some alumni coming back (Friday) that were here and some that are coming (Saturday) to meet the new girls and the reason why we have girls soccer is the girls that played in games 1, 2 and 3 and what not.”

Streamwood 5, Westminster Christian 0: Kim Jimenez had 2 goals, while Tawny Carroll, Hannah McGlone and Erika Delgado added single knocks to lead the Sabres (4-2-2). Jimenez, McGlone, Rosa Miranda and Ilma Skrgic each had assists. Natalie Guindon made 2 saves in goal for Streamwood.

Harvest Christian 1, Elgin Academy 1: Ellie Burzlaff scored an unassisted goal for Harvest Christian. Tori Nelson had 4 saves for the Lions (2-0-3).
