Marble fragment of Lincoln sarcophagus on display

SPRINGFIELD — A fragment of the marble sarcophagus that once contained Abraham Lincoln’s coffin is on display at the Lincoln Tomb Historic Site in Springfield.

Officials say the sarcophagus went missing when the tomb had major renovations in 1930. Nearly 50 years later, in 1978, workers found chunks of marble mixed with construction debris in an unfinished portion of the tomb’s interior. Historians concluded the pieces were part of the missing sarcophagus.

The pieces were placed in storage and not shown to the public. However now a main piece is on display in the tomb’s Memorial Hall.
