Marion Janiec, wife of current park Commissioner Richard Janiec, was rejected for a seat on the Streamwood Park District Board Tuesday as voters returned the three incumbents.
Janiec received 932 votes in unofficial returns with all 19 precincts reporting. Thomas E. Keating led with 1,473 votes, followed by Adriana Armstrong with 1,442 and Richard Brogan with 1,382.
Keating said he hopes the incumbents won “because we’ve a proven track record.”
Brogan, president of the board, urged residents to come to meetings with any concerns or complaints or to tell members what direction they want to see the board take.
“I think that the voters believe in the strategic plan that we have in place, not that we can get everything done overnight,” said Brogan. “We’re trying very hard. We understand that times are hard for everyone, and we’re doing the best we can with the money we have.”
Brogan said he did not know why voters rejected Marion Janiec, but he does not think it would be positive to have a married couple on the board. Richard Janiec is midway through his current term.
“Nobody wants to see family members on the same board,” he said. “It doesn’t give you the diversity you’re looking for, including ethnic diversity.”
Marion Janiec, who could not be reached for comment Tuesday, said during the campaign that she was just another citizen exercising her right to get more involved in the community.
“I’m my own person,” she said. “My opinion is my opinion. They see me as an extension of my husband, and I am by no means an extension of my husband.”Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
