Buffalo Grove senior Mike DiViesti drove in 3 runs and sophomore Justin Hasek struck four in his 1-inning relief stint to help the visiting Bison hold on against Prospect 4-3 in the Mid-Suburban East opener for both teams on Monday.
Nick Carpinelli had a pair of his, including a double, for Buffalo Grove.
Bison starter Jon Niemann allowed 8 hits and 3 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings.
Prospect’s Welby Malczewski went 6 innings, allowing 10 hits and striking out six.
Jackson Wrede had 3 hits and A.J. Compton had 2 for the Knights.
Palatine 8, Fremd 6: Palatine managed to score 6 runs on 2 hits in the first inning, and Matt Saltess had an RBI single in Palatine’s 2-run fourth inning, which proved to be the winning runs in the Pirates’ MSL West victory at Fremd. Bill Stewart had 2 hits for Palatine
Nolan Gavin got the win after pitching 6 innings. He struck out three, walked one and gave up 10 hits. Jarrod Juskiewicz got the final two outs to earn a save.
Andrew Starks had 3 hits for Fremd and Alec Dompke and Jon Esobar had 2 each.
Elk Grove 1, Wheeling 0 (8): There was no shortage of quality pitching, as Michael Anciulis’ one-out RBI single in the eighth inning was the difference for the host Grens.
David Camacho started for Elk Grove and pitched 5 scoreless innings. Mike Woods releived and pitched 2 hitless inning with 3 strikeouts.
Ryan Bendewald tossed 7 innings of shutout ball with 4 strikeouts. Brenden Spillane pitched the eighth inning for Wheeling.
Leyden 7, Oak Park-River Forest 1: Ivan Nevarez (7-7) tossed a complete-game 6-hitter for his first varsity victory of the season as the visiting Eagles picked up a West Suburban divisional crossover victory.
