A Hoffman Estates man is being held on $500,000 bond after shooting a police officer with a BB gun over the weekend, authorities said today.
Mark Mlynarczyk, 47, of the 1800 block of Ashley Road, was arrested after a confrontation with police responding to a report of a family problem at his home about 9:20 p.m. Friday.
Responding officers initially were told Mlynarczyk was armed with a knife, but upon arrival they learned he had put down the knife and armed himself with a realistic-looking BB gun before exiting the rear of the home, police said.
According to police, an officer observed Mlynarczyk walking toward a vehicle in the driveway at the rear of the home and ordered him to drop his weapon. Mlynarczyk took a few steps back and started to raise the gun toward the officers, police said.
One officer tried to disarm Mlynarczyk with the use of a Taser, according to authorities, but the Hoffman Estates man recovered from the effects of the stun gun and started shooting at the officer.
The officer was struck in the chest and hand, police said, with one of the pellets becoming deeply embedded in his hand. He was transported to the hospital, treated for his injuries and released, police said.
Mlynarczyk faces charges of aggravated battery to a police officer, a Class 2 felony, and domestic battery. If convicted of the felony charge, he would face a maximum three to seven years in prison.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
