Overcoming cold conditions on Friday, Huntley was able to crush Crystal Lake Central 16-0.
Saturday, windy conditions which produced 40 mile per hour gusts were no problem for the Red Raiders’ hitters.
Scoring 23 runs on 20 hits, Huntley improved to 6-0 with a sweep of Hononegah, 11-7 and 12-2, in a nonconference doubleheader played at Huntley. Game 2 ended in the sixth inning after a 3-run double Katelyn Behrens.
“I was very pleased with the offensive output,” said Huntley coach Mark Petryniec. “We have a good lineup 1 through 13. We had a lot of quality at-bats. “
In Game 1, trailing 5-3 after 4˝ half innings, the Red Raiders scored 6 in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.
With 11 hitters coming to the plate, Huntley collected 6 hits and benefitted from 3 Indian errors. The key hits in the inning were a 2-run double by pitcher Haley Spannraft and a 2-run single from Randi Peterson.
Peterson (3 runs scored, 3 RBI), Jessica Shields (2 runs scored) and Tamara Funke collected 2 hits each.
Hononegah was led by Ashley Hantz, who was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and a double.
In Game 2, Huntley pitcher Ashley Laxner gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in the first inning. But the Red Raider junior settled down and blanked the Indians on 4 hits during the final five innings. Laxner struck out 4 without allowing a walk in 6 innings of work for the day.
“I am very proud of the way Ashley bounced back after a tough first inning,” said Petryniec. “She kept them off balance and induced them to hit a lot of ground balls.”
Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Huntley bats came alive in scoring 12 runs in the final four innings.
The key hit for the Red Raiders in a 5-run third was a 2-run homer by freshman Megan Baczewski..
Jessica Shields contributed a 2-run single as the Red Raiders scored 3 in the fourth.
Shields led Huntley with 3 hits.
“I am impressed with the way we have hit the ball this season,” said Peterson, a 4-year starter. “The wind was a factor today but we handled it well.”Copyright © 2014 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
