C-G edges Antioch in 12 innings

By

Antioch's softball nemesis got the best of the Sequoits again Wednesday.

But this time it took Cary-Grove 12 innings to pull out a 3-1 nonconference win in Cary.

"It was a very, very epic game," Antioch coach Anthony Rocco said after his squad fell to 3-1. "I've never seen a game like that. It was one great play after another."

Both starting pitchers -- Yale-bound Lindsay Efflandt of C-G and Katie Phillips of Antioch -- went the distance in the circle. Phillips struck out six and did not allow an earned run.

Antioch was considered the home team and nearly won the game in walk-off fashion. Batting in the bottom of the ninth, Kaylene Ressler belted an Efflandt pitch off the top of the fence. The ball stayed in the park, and Ressler wound up on second base with a double.

"It was hammered," Rocco said. "Straight through the wind."

Antioch got great plays in the field, Rocco said, from left fielder Taylor Schiltz, shortstop Jessica Pedersen and second baseman Mackenzie Thomas.

Both teams scored a run in their half of the third inning.

Buffalo Grove 8, Grant 2: Buffalo Grove improved to 3-0 as sophomore Julia Camardo (2-0) fired a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts.

Erin Barton belted two line-drive homers (solo and 3-run blast) over the center-field fence and finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Caitlyn Catino was 2-for-4 for the host Bison, who also received a double from Megan Fu.

Wauconda 11, Woodstock 0: The host Bulldogs won their fifth in a row, as Megan Luchowski got the win.

Lexie Redmann doubled and freshman Brooke Sefcik tripled for Wauconda (5-1) in the nonconference game.

Mundelein 9, Palatine 3: Haley Morelli homered for the second straight day for the Mustangs.

Maddie Zazas had a double for Mundelein (3-1), while Molly Ellett earned the win.

Zion-Benton 11, Stevenson 5: The Patriots fell to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the North Suburban Lake, despite a triple from Taylor Koenigs and a double from Jordan Cortesi.

Hersey 6, Vernon Hills 3: The host Cougars lost their season opener, as the Huskies built a 6-1 lead.

Jordyn Comitor and Jenn Claussen each had a single, walk and stolen base for Vernon Hills.
