Warrenville council candidate backs former opponent

A candidate in Warrenville's Ward 4 aldermanic race has suspended his campaign and now is endorsing one of the two remaining hopefuls.

Thomas Sherlock's name still will appear on the April 9 ballot. However, he's asking anyone planning to vote for him to instead support fellow newcomer Tom Linford over incumbent Clare Barry.

"My thought was that two candidates running against an incumbent would more likely split the vote and the incumbent would win, which I do not want to happen," Sherlock wrote in an email to the Daily Herald. "I will rerun in two years."

Linford said he was surprised by Sherlock's announcement, which was made late last week. He added that he appreciates the unexpected endorsement.

"I think it's very important," Linford said.

The 67-year-old retired operations manager says he and Sherlock agree that Warrenville residents are overtaxed.

"If we have a problem, we've added taxes and we spend more," Linford said of the city's existing leadership. "There's been no cost reductions."

Barry insists the council has been responsible with the city's budget. She said Linford and Sherlock criticize the way the city operates without offering suggestions on how it could be run better.

"They have no answers," the 62-year-old office worker said.

Barry said she doesn't believe Sherlock's support of Linford will change the outcome of the race.

"I think we've each said what we've wanted to say," she said. "People already have made up their minds. I don't know if the last-minute (endorsement) is going to make that much of a difference."

In the city's other contested council race, Scott Allen is facing another newcomer, Kathryn Davolos, for a Ward 3 seat.
