Like any large organization, Palatine Park District has several staff committees to facilitate special projects and events. Some of PPD's committees include the Safety Committee, the Environmental Committee, the Wellness Committee, and the Social Committee. Several staff members recently noticed a need in the committee offerings, and formed a new Service Committee at Palatine Park District.
The goal of the committee is to provide a variety of service opportunities to both staff members and the community throughout the year. A few of the committee's proposed projects include assisting with an environmental cleanup at Riemer Reservoir in September, working at the Roots Community Garden this spring, providing service to a yet to be decided animal group, and planning a project for the National Day of Service.

In an effort to make a difference right here in the Palatine community, the Service Committee's first project is a Breakfast of Champions Food Drive. The food drive will be conducted through April 14 and collected items will be delivered to the Palatine Township Food Pantry by members of the Service Committee. Donations can be dropped off at the registration/reception areas of Community Center, Birchwood, Falcon Park, and Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center. Donations will also be accepted at the Free Healthy Living Expo on April 6 from 8-11 a.m., at Birchwood Recreation Center.
Healthy Living is an event that includes the free Expo featuring 20 health and environmental exhibitors, along with a 5K Run and 12 Mile Bike Ride that require registration and a fee. On-site registration will be accepted at the event on April 6.
While all donations are welcome, the committee has decided to concentrate on a Breakfast of Champions theme to help the community start the day in a healthy way. Nonperishable items needed at this time by the Palatine Township Food Pantry include: Cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, coffee, tea, juice, canned fruit, pancake mix and granola bars.
Palatine Park District staff who are volunteering their time as members of the Service Committee include: Donelda Danz, Jean Farrar, Trish Feid, Cristina Lara, Carol Lange, Dan Mangum, Marilyn Pedersen, Christine Rice and Joan Scovic. Many other Palatine Park District staff members have also volunteered to help with committee projects and events.
The mission of Palatine Park District is to provide a variety of safe, enjoyable and affordable parks and recreation facilities and activities that will enhance the quality of life by promoting good health and well-being for all residents and visitors of the Palatine Park District.
