Burlington Central dumps Elgin

There now will be a little more pressure on Burlington Central softball pitchers Brooke Gaylord and Emily Kisch.

With sophomore pitcher Angie Morrow undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery March 29, Gaylord is looking forward to the opportunity.

The junior left-hander earned the victory Monday in the Rockets’ 4-3 victory over host Elgin.

“I’m excited for the season. It stinks having Angie gone, but me and Kisch will pitch for her and do the best we can for the team,” Gaylord said.

Kisch started the game, going three innings. The freshman allowed 1 hit and 1 run. She struck out 6 and walked 1.

Gaylord (2-1) came in in the fourth with the Rockets leading 4-1. She walked the first batter she faced and then allowed a long home run to Monica Stockman as the Maroons (4-1) got to within 4-3. Gaylord settled down after the home run, allowing just one more hit and retired the final eight batters.

“I feel really good about both of them,” Rockets coach Wade Maisto said of Gaylord and Kisch. “I just like the way that they both approach stuff. I have that option if I want to use both of them. Will I do it every time? No.”

Central (4-1) gave Kisch a 2-0 lead before she headed into the circle. Bekah Harnish doubled with two outs in the top of the first. Lauren King followed with a double to right-center to drive in Harnish. Kisch then drove in King with a single to center for a 2-0 lead.

The Maroons got one back in the bottom of the first Sabrina Stockman scored on a groundball from Kelly Bremer.

The Rockets took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth as King hit her second double of the game to drive in Harnish, who walked. Kisch then singled in King.

Gaylord, Courtni Neubauer, King and Kisch each had 2 hits for the Rockets.

Jennah Perryman (3-1) suffered the loss despite striking out 10. She allowed 10 hits and 4 earned runs.
