With no money, no car, and a life-changing disease, Bruce, a member of B.R. Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County, refused to feel sorry for his circumstances and decided to ask the Y for help.
"The Y was good enough to provide me with a membership scholarship. I use the Y every day during the week and look forward to working out and socializing with many great friends. I am much happier, stronger and have never had more friends in my life," Bruce said.
To ensure the Y can continue to provide residents with life-enhancing services, B.R. Ryall is launching its annual community support campaign April 1. Financial gifts will help advance programming and services to support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. More importantly, gifts stay in the community.
Based in Glen Ellyn, the Y also serves Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Warrenville, Wheaton, Winfield and West Chicago.
"Through our community support campaign, we want to educate people that we are more than a place to exercise or swim, but a charity that does vital work thanks to the financial support of the community. Financial contributions to the campaign allow us to extend a caring hand," said Lynda Chott, chief executive officer.
Last year, financial support made it possible for children to have a safe place to learn and build confidence in before- and after-school program; for families to reconnect and grow; for seniors and individuals to socialize and connect; for single parents to have quality child care; and for children and teens to enjoy summer camp.
Funds will support a variety of programs and allow the Y to provide financial assistance to children, families and individuals in the community.
